“Dhaa...!" Dhatri looked back startled.  Disha was broadly smiling at her.  Didi... She turned back.  The tall person had gone.  Disha came around and occupied his vacant seat.  Dhatri was happy.  Her Didi was with her.  She didn’t bother to know where that person went.

“You look beautiful..!” Disha complemented and Dhaa blushed.

“How was it in the morning?” Disha asked.  Dhatri went into thinking mode for a while and then said...

“It was ok.  80% I didn’t understand, 20% was not worth understanding...!” Disha burst out in laughter.  Dhatri looked around startled.

“Dhaa...!” Disha squeezed her shoulder.  Dhatri continued...

“Dr. Koite gave a monotonous, boring lecture for two hours with the help of slides... Then some Q and A and then M’am...!” she gazed dreamily thinking about her Maria M’am’s lecture.

“She was very good.  Very crisp and precise, short..!”  Dhatri said praying, that her First Rank Disha Didi should not ask further about the contents.  Dhaa had not understood anything at all.  Fortunately Disha didn’t probe deeper.  Dhatri had the accent problem, plus the botanical terms were all bouncers, plus she was busy devouring the titbits circulated in between. But both the professors had taken her name quite a few times, praising her for knowing the area inside out and helping them with the local names of the plants...!  Dr. Koite has spent almost five minutes in talking about the youngest team member, Dhatri Dixit.  Dhatri had hidden herself far away at the back in the dark corner.  The huge Student Union Building of Boise State University and the State of the Art Conference Facility was bustling with students, professors, guests and awardees..!

Dhatri had found herself lost in that bustle, in the morning.  Her team was with her but she felt alien in their American talks.  There was nothing of her interest.  She waited for the Morning Session to start.  And it did with three boring lectures, break in between, some titbits, drinks and an array of Q and A sessions.  She dozed off in between hiding herself.  “Why am I here?” she kept asking herself.  She heard her name and wished be vanished from there.  She was alone at the back occupying a chair at the small round table, looking at the big screens and the slides displayed, trying hard to make out of what was going on.  The students asking questions, the speaker answering, the other people taking part in the discussion, their mild humour; she watched them all with beady eyes.  Her team was somewhere at the front.  She saw Ravi raising his hand for a question and gaped at his flawless speech. “He is not that bad..!” she listened to him with rapt attention.  The Questions he asked were appreciated and his views about faulty methods of re-forestation were applauded.  Dhatri too clapped hard grinning with pride.  Her team mate had made an impression, after all!

But her changed opinion about this ABCD was short lived.  She soon opined, he was the same wicked person, when he dragged her against her will and pushed her on stage declaring her name.  Soon she was surrounded by a crowd to her dismay and she felt weak and pale.  She gaped stupidly at the people and Soumya had come to her rescue, answering all the questions smartly and saving Dhatri.  Dhatri felt indebted to Soumya.  “Thank you..!” she whispered gratefully holding her hand, when they assembled for lunch.  Ravi was smirking wickedly at her poor show.  She couldn’t even say “Thank you!” without stuttering, on the stage.  But Jim sympathized with her standing by her side distracting the inquisitive students with his wit and humour. Soon she went into the background and Jim and Soumya were the center of attraction.

“Sir..!” She held Indorneel’s hand when she saw him with a glass, alone for a brief period of time.  “Dhatri...!” He smiled patting on her head.

“You had promised me..!” she accused.  He grinned. “That was on Airport..!” he said winking and added... “Dhaa, this is a big opportunity, talk to other students out here.  Tell them what you do.  Ask about them...!” he placed his hand on her shoulder.  She jerked away... “Is is doing it on purpose.  He knows, I can’t talk!” She turned her back on him.  Indroneel gaped at her. Any other person would have grabbed this opportunity to impress people.  But Dhatri had hidden herself.

“Hey, Dhatri..!” Ravi had come up with a glass.  “This is nice!” he held out the glass for her.  She had a bad taste in her mouth, seeing him in front.  He was the real culprit to push her on to the stage.  She turned and started walking away.  He didn’t follow her but looked at her seriously.  “What’s her problem?” he bemused looking at her figure moving away.  She had no one.  She clutched her plate not wanting to talk to anyone in the crowd.  She sat on a chair away from everyone.  Jim came over.

“Dhatri..! How is the food?” he asked her brightly.  She just nodded.  He took the next seat.  She shrunk.  He sat there with her without a word for a while.  She felt better.

“H..How are you?” She asked stuttering and he looked at her in surprise.  “You asking me now? We met two days back, Dhatri..!” he said and she smiled sheepishly.  “Anyway, I am good!” he answered her question and then asked touching her shoulder, “How are you?” she looked at him and then said “Not good!” he faked shock.  “Why?” he asked.

“This is a crowded place!” she said looking down and he smiled.  “Humm...! Right!” he looked at her seriously.  “Come I will take you out of this crowd..!” he said holding her hand.  She kept the plate aside and went with him out of that hall into the vast lobby.  The place looked peaceful with very few relaxing in the lounge.  Dhatri walked with Jim and they settled in a corner.  Soon she was giggling and talking with ease.  He transported her to their expedition in India and the tribals and Bijoy and their Dance and Mahua...! She kept giggling and tossing her head back laughing loudly.  Her nervousness had vanished she was back to normal.

“Chaalo..!” Jim grinned gesturing inside and she grinned back.  “Chalo!” she said feeling relieved.  He smiled and putting his hand around her shoulder moved inside.  She didn’t mind...! They came in to find Soumya and Ray talking to a group of students and Dr. Maria busy with some delegates.  She headed towards the vacant seats and settled herself seeing Jim surrounded by another group.  “Huh...!” she sighed looking down.

“Dhaa...” Disha nudged her hearing her name announced for the award.  The team had received Young Achievers’ Student Award for their contribution to the Research on Deciduous forests.  Dhatri got up struggling, scared to the core.  Her stage fright surfaced.  Ravi gripped her arm and guided her to the stage.  Soumya had already reached followed by Jim and Ravi took Dhatri alone.  All the four were decorated with a medal, a scroll of merit and a memento of a model of Boice Peak with desert at the foothills and dense green forest at the peak.  Dhatri accepted with shaky hands and just said “Thank you” when others spoke about their experiences.  Disha couldn’t see clearly with hazy vision, tears brimming her lashes.  Her little sister was honoured. Bhanu too wrapped his arm around Disha feeling proud and elated.  Dhatri got down and came to Disha thrusting the memento and scroll of merit.  She tried to remove the medal from her around her neck but Disha stopped her.  “No..!Let it be! It’s your achievement Dhaa...!” she hugged her.

“Dhaa?” Disha looked around for her.  Dhatri had never left her hand.  Disha was proud to be with Dhatri that evening.  Many congratulated Dhatri.  She only smiled shyly.  Disha spoke with ease to everyone.  Dhatri was relieved.

“Dhaa...” Indroneel pulled her closer.  Dhatri jerked away.  His behaviour in the morning had irked her.  She glared at him.
“Come..!” he said enthusiastically.  She shook her head.  “I am not coming..!” she sulked.

“I want to introduce you to someone... very important..!” He dragged her.  She stood her ground.  “I am not coming..!” she turned her back and vanished in the crowd.  Indroneel shook his head hopelessly and went away.

“Hello...!” Dhatri said pleasantly.  The tall man turned.  “Aray Wah, Dhatri.. Congratulations..!” he held her hand.  “Dhanyavaad!” she said smiling.  He looked around for vacant chairs and soon they engrossed themselves in chatting.

“Where is Dhatri?” Disha looked around.  “She went with Dr. Ghosh.” Bhanu replied and Disha continued with her discussion with the group, feeling relaxed.

“Hey, Disha.. where is she?” Indroneel asked coming to Disha with a couple of other delegates.  Disha looked puzzled.  “She went with you..!” She said and Indroneel said, ”No! She didn’t come with me!” Disha looked at Bhanu.  He too looked around.
“Hi.. Where is Dhatri?” Ravi with his father came up to Disha and Indroneel.  The crowd was thinning out.  They searched for her.
“She was with me for some time... Then a group of students came and she went somewhere suddenly..” Ravi’s father said gravely.  Ravi went in search of Jim.  Soumya had already left with her husband.

Maria came to them.  “Hello!” she said pleasantly.  “Where is Dhatri?” Ravi and Jim asked impatiently. Maria looked confused.  “Must be around!” she said casually.  But then her face changed color.  People had filed out.  She took out her phone to call Dr. Koite.
Three hours after the evening function, late in the night, all of them... Jim, Ravi, his father, Disha, Bhanu, Dr. Koite, and Dr. Maria were at the security office of the Boise State University, filing a missing report... for Dhatri Salil Dixit, recipient of the Travellers’ award...!

“Disha Didi…!” she screamed startling everyone.  Disha, laden with shopping bags walked into India Exotic, with Bhanu.  Ravi too got up.  Dhatri ran forward and Disha embraced her dropping her bags on the floor.  Bhanu gave a light hug to Ravi.  Dhatri dragged Disha…

“My elder sister… She is scientist in NASA..!” She introduced proudly.  Disha shook hands.

“Oh! This was the plan…! I was wondering… why we didn’t fly from New York to Boise..!” Soumya said holding Disha’s hand.  Bhanu grinned.

“Yeah.. Disha couldn’t wait to meet her little sister..!” he said wrapping his arm around Dhatri’s shoulder.  Dhatri grinned happily.

“Dhaa…!” Disha gave a couple of bags to Dhatri, taking her aside.  “What is this?” Dhatri asked bewildered.

“Dresses for you…” she said repelling Dhatri.

“No! Dhaa.. listen..!” Disha pleaded earnestly.  Dhatri looked away angrily.

“Dhaa… Rini had called up yesterday…!” Disha was successful in getting Dhatri’s attention.

“She told me to give this to you…!” she pointed at the bags…! Dhatri looked at her puzzled.

“Dhaa…Specially for the conference….! I bought them from the best shop in Detroit..!” Disha didn’t know how to convince Dhatri.  Dhatri’s eyes spat hatred.

“How much did it cost you, Didi?” she asked angrily, raising her voice.
“Shuu… Dhaa… Stop it!” Disha squeezed her hand.  Dhatri looked around calming down a little bit.

“Look… Rini …!” Disha started off weakly.. Dhatri raised her hand.

“Didi.. Please… I got them plenty… Please return these if possible.. I don’t want them..!” Dhatri was determined.  Disha looked dejected.  “Why can’t she understand? It’s a big event..! She should look decent..!” Disha threw a disgust at Dhaa’s jeans, T-Shirt and jacket.  Dhaa understood Disha’s thoughts.

“Don’t worry Didi, I have a blazer…!” She took a deep breath… “And… you need not attend the function… No one will know that this shabby girl is your sister…!” Dhatri spat and Disha winced.

“Hey Dhatri, what would you like to have?” Indroneel raised his voice

“Anything…!” Dhatri yelled back and Disha threw her hands in the air hopelessly.  Dhatri had already started walking towards the table.  Disha stopped her holding her hand.

“Dhaa… Please… I never meant that…! I just wanted you to look best…! It’s ok. If you don’t want these..!” She picked up the bags and turned.  Dhatri followed her.  Disha didn’t speak at all after that.  She became only a passive listener in the discussion.  Dhatri kept glancing at her, feeling bad.

That “Anything..” was a foot-long Sandwich and Pasta-salad…! And Tandoor special…! Dhatri chose Tandoor special.  She couldn’t eat it with knife and fork…! Her Rini didi had taught her to eat with spoon, knife and fork… but had not taught her how to eat Tandoor and Tangadi..Chicken with that…! She looked around and pushed the plate aside taking a spoonful of Salad in her plate.

“What?” Bhanu asked her.  She shook her head looking down.  “Only salad..” she said swallowing the mouth watering aroma of Tandoor.  Ravi had already picked it up from the plate and was devouring it like a hungry man, not bothering to use the cutlery.  Dhatri frowned muttering furiously.  Ravi glared at her.  She had to eat that bland salad and tasteless sandwich.  The only spicy thing in it was mustard sauce which was equally bland by Indian standards!

“Didi…!” Dhatri gripped Disha’s hand while walking.  Disha stopped and turned.  Dhatri took the bags from her hand.  “I will wear…!” she said and Disha couldn’t stop her tears.

“Only if they are comfortable…!” she added the condition. Disha nodded furiously.

“Yes Dahh..!” She hugged her little sister.  “And All the best..! I will be there for the award function…!” she said parting with her.  Dhatri carried the bags with her.

***********  **********

Dhatri was in a fix.  The Dresses Disha had bought for her were not of her standards! She threw them on the bed, frustrated.  She had a strong urge of wearing her normal jeans and jacket… but that would hurt her Disha didi.  She had to choose between the three dresses Disha had bought for her.

One was a long evening gown, which was out of question.  Dhatri would never be comfortable with that.  She was sure she would fall down in that dress.  The second one was a short, dull pink skirt with matching shrug and white shirt.  The shortness of the skirt was so appalling, Dhatri threw it away immediately.  The third one was a light blue trouser and white shirt with light blue jacket.  Dhatri thought for a while and picked up the third one.  That was somewhat nearer to her taste.  There was no question of looking at the accompanying apparels as Dhatri never wore anything other than her clothes and a pair of small studs in her ears.  She wouldn’t take out her Kirtimuth from her neck.  That was her Rakshak Pendent.

“This is better..!” She looked at herself in the mirror.  Dr. Maria knocked on the door before entering.  She looked at Dhatri approving her outfit.  Dhatri smiled shyly.  A vehicle was waiting for them …!

Dhatri hid herself from everyone hiding behind someone or the other.  She held on to Maria for some time and when she saw herself surrounded by other people busy talking to Maria she had to find someone else who would be with her throughout.  She found none.  No one she knew was nearer.  She was panic desperately wanting someone to be with her.  She looked for Indroneel but found him talking to a group of people and the boys were nowhere to be seen.  Soumya was with her husband and Dhatri had none…!

She saw a tall, lean man walking towards her with Dr. Indroneel and tried to vanish from the scene.  “Dhatri..!” Indroneel called her out and she had to stop.

“Dhatri Dixit…!” He introduced her to the tall man.  She avoided looking at them and just nodded.

“Hello Beti..!” Came a pleasant voice and she looked up in surprise.  She joined her hands.  “He…Hello!” she said shyly.

“Kaisi ho?” he asked in pure Hindi and smile appeared on her face.  “Acchi hoon!” she said little relaxed.  The tall man took over…! Indroneel left them alone.  He gestured at the nearby seat and they settled.  Someone from her own state, in that alien country was a great respite.  She had found the company.  She was happy.  His flawless Hindi reminded her of her Papa.  She missed her home…!

She didn’t know, who that person was, but felt warmth in his speech.  She felt better.  The award function was about to start… There was no trace of her team.  She was alone with the tall man in that crowd of strangers.  The lights dimmed and the stage illuminated.  There was a pin drop silence and the convener took over the proceedings.  Dhatri sat with bated breath.

“Airport?” She looked aghast.  Terminal Four of the gigantic, massive JFK International Airport was buzzing with bustle of people.  She held Indroneel’s hand tightly, again losing herself in fright.  “What am I doing here?” she was dragged behind him.  He held his cabin bag on one shoulder and held her hand.  She was all lost doing nothing to help him.

“Dhaa…! Chalo..!” he dragged her with him to collect their baggage.  She swallowed hard.  “I shouldn’t have come here…!” She just wanted to run away.  She was trapped in the jungle of buildings and people all around.

“Wait…! I will be right back!” he said and she clutched his wrist.

“No.. Please… Uncle… Don’t leave me alone…!” she held on to him.  He sighed.

“Ok. Come with me..!” he said pulling her to collect the baggage.  They had to wait for a long time for their baggage to arrive on the conveyer belt.  Then it took time for the security check.  Dhatri’s restlessness increased with every passing minute.

“Why did you bring me here?” She asked on the verge of crying.  Indroneel pitied her.

“Poor Girl!” he sympathized with her.  “Dhaa… Beti… We will be out soon…! Your Maria M’am is coming…!” he tried to cheer her up in vain.  She looked more pathetic, not even trying to walk on her own.

A long walk to the exit exhausted her completely.  Indroneel did everything.  She acted like a baggage herself.

“Should I put you on this luggage trolley?” he asked angrily and she looked at him sheepishly.

“S…Sorry!” she said still clutching his arm as if he had threatened her that he will leave her at the Airport..

“Dhaa…. I am not going anywhere without you..!” he said irritated.  She again left his arm only for a second and then clutching his coat, walked with him.

Dr. Maria Nixon had volunteered to receive them at NY Airport.

“Hey…!” She saw Dr. Maria waving at them excitedly.  Indroneel turned to her.

“See? I told you!” he said grinning at her.  Dhatri smiled happily.  Maria shook hands with Indroneel and hugged him lightly and then pulled Dhatri into a tight embrace.  Dhatri smiled broadly.

“Look at you…!” She held Dhaa at arms length appreciating.  Dhatri smiled blushing.  “Put on weight… huh?” Maria teased her.  She looked away embarrassed.

“No trek, no exercise…!” Indroneel pulled her leg.  She hid herself behind M’am.  But to her shock, someone pulled her apart and she screamed in fright.

“Hey.. Dhatri …!” Jim was pulling her towards him.  She gaped.. “Hey…Smile..!” he touched her dimple with his finger drowning himself again in her deep dimples and bright innocent smile.  She moved away shyly and Maria pulled her closer.

“Look Who’s there..!” She said.  Indroneel had already gone ahead to greet the couple.  Soumya Soorie… now Soumya Bhind… came running.  Dhatri gaped at her in surprise.

“Hey, Dhatri..!” Soumya hugged her too.  Dhatri glanced at her husband, Mr. Harindar Pal Singh Bhind…! He had his business in Canada… Soumya had come from Canada for the conference.  Another round of greetings took place.  Dhatri pulled Indroneel’s sleeve.

“What?” he asked her turning back.  She pointed at the person approaching and Indroneel dashed to greet him enthusiastically.

Dr. Koite greeted everyone pleasantly.  He pulled Dhatri near… “You have turned into a beautiful young lady…!” he ruffled her hair fondly.  Maria smiled broadly and putting her arm around Dhatri’s shoulder said, “Time to move…!” Dhatri happily pushed out the trolley.

A specious big van pulled over and they stuffed their luggage in the boot space of the van.  Dhatri hopped in and froze.  Ravi looked behind smirking from behind the steering.

“Here is a plan…!” Maria took out a big scroll of paper and Soumya screamed… “Oh.. No… Not again!  No Contour Map please…!” Dhatri tossed her head back and giggled happily… and suddenly fell silent sensing that Ravi was glaring at her from the rear view mirror.  She hid her face moving towards the window and busied herself looking out the window.  Ravi smirked.

First stop Cleveland…. Indian Exotic…! Maria said grinning.  Till then… “Food packets..!” she distributed taking out a huge canister for drinks.  Dhatri grinned happily.  Finally she would have some decent food.

“Next is Detroit..! We will fly to Boise, tomorrow morning..!” he said.

“Again?” Dhatri shuddered with the nightmarish experience of her first flight from New Delhi and New York.  Indroneel patted on her shoulder.  She looked back at him angrily.  He grinned.  “Don’t worry, Dhaa…Nothing will happen to you!” he said and everyone looked at him.
“She gave me a hard time….!” He wiped off his forehead and Dhatri frowned.

“Why did you bring me here?” she blurted looking out of the window.

Dr. Koite was happy to be with his old team again.  Soumya was very quiet.  Her husband had left her at the JFK Airport and had left.  Dr. Maria kept glancing at Dhatri fondly.  Jim was grabbed by Dr. Indroneel and Dhatri had enough time to close her eyes and have a nice nap… She had no interest in the talks.  Maria patted on her head soothingly.  Dhatri went into deep slumber in the moving van.

The seven hour journey went by in a jiffy
